My current work explores folklore in modern society and the intersection of memory and truth.
I typically select a subject that invokes an important memory relating to folklore, then use watercolour, pencil and ink to make them stand out against the fog of time. I often weave my pictures with poetry – a sort of spell to pull the reader in even deeper so they can judge for themselves what is true or not.
This process helps me decode my past whilst enabling others to experience a way of life that is at threat from the modern world.
About Kapu Lewis
Kapu Lewis is a Welsh artist, visual poet and writer. She is largely self-taught, though studied as a child under the Welsh-Italian artist Arthur Giardelli. She gained a Masters in Creative Writing (with Distinction) in 2023 from The University of Kent.
Kapu is currently working on a collection of artwork exploring folklore practices in West Wales, an illustrated poetry collection, and several commissions.
She also mentors emerging writers and poets with a focus on neurodiverse voices.
She recently exhibited her work for the first time in London and has plans for further exhibitions in 2027.
Her prose and poetry have been published worldwide and shortlisted for multiple awards.
Kapu sources folk customs and folktales from her own experiences, her native West Wales, and from around the world, with a particular focus on Northern Europe and China.
